Continental European schools are experiencing a “renaissance”. |
Review of the ranking of world universities QS 2013
In 2013, educational institutions in Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Italy significantly strengthened their position in the ranking of the world’s strongest universities QS.
The honorable place of the leader was taken by Switzerland (in the top twenty of the ranking there are 2 educational institutions). Other countries have also “tightened up” their positions.
With all the changes, the rating remains “extremely stable”. According to John O’Leary, executive member of the World Scientific Advisory Board QS, only one university left the TOP-50, and only 4 “players” dropped out of the top 100.
“The variability of some international university rankings 123helpme.me has often been criticized, but in the 2013/14 list of the world’s best QS universities, the average promotion among the top 100 universities is less than 3.5 positions, up from 4.6 last year,” O wrote … Leary in this year’s rating review.
The best positions
In the TOP-5 best world universities in 2013/2014 according to QS were:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Harvard University; Cambridge University; University College London; Imperial College London.
Compared to last year, the positions have changed a bit: Harvard and Cambridge have changed places, and Imperial College has pushed Oxford University out of the top five.
Stanford rose from 15th to seventh place this year, pushing Yale University down one position. The University of Chicago also lost one point, and ranked ninth, while 10th place was shared by the California Institute of Technology and Princeton.
The QS rating evaluates six criteria in different proportions: 40% is an assessment of the university’s academic reputation, based on a global academic study; 10% – the reputation of university graduates with employers; 20% is the ratio of teaching staff and students; 20% – citation of scientific publications of teachers; 5% – for foreign students and 5% – for foreign teachers.
Universities in the United States and the United Kingdom, as usual, dominate the top of the rankings, ranking 17 of the top 20. Six schools represent the UK in the top 20 QS rankings.
“Nevertheless, there is more diversity outside the top twenty. US universities make up less than a third of the top 100 and rank exactly a quarter in the TOP-200. As last year, the UK is represented by 19 universities in the top 100. and 30 in the second, ”O’Leary wrote.
“European Revival”
In particular, there is a “revival” among the universities of continental Europe: “The process is led by Switzerland, which is currently represented in the TOP-20 by two universities, after jumping up 10 positions of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne. The Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich has the highest position among non-English-speaking universities – 12 “, says O’Leary.
The Netherlands is in the top 100 by two universities more than last year, and all six have improved their positions this year. Although Germany is only represented in the TOP-50 by the Ruprecht and Karl University of Heidelberg, eight of its 13 universities in the TOP-200 have risen to the top of this year’s rankings.
France has two universities in the top 50, and 19 are among the top 400. Italian higher education institutions are not yet in the TOP-100, but in the overall ranking of the current year (among the top 400), each of the Apennine universities has increased its position (some – by as much as 50 points). Scandinavian universities in the QS ranking are represented by Copenhagen (45th place) and Norwegian universities (89th place).
Other countries of the world
Australia has seven institutions in the top 100, but O’Leary notes that several of its low-ranking universities have dropped out of the list of the best this year. The same goes for Canada.
“The progress made earlier by universities in the Middle East has not been maintained in the latest rankings, with the exception of Israel, which is currently represented by three universities in the TOP-200. But there have also been successes in Latin America, especially in Brazil, where 10 universities are ranked for the first time. “
In Africa, the University of Cape Town has moved into the top 150. American University in Cairo is the only African university outside of South Africa in the TOP-500.
None of the Asian universities entered the TOP-20, but some advanced up in the rankings. The National University of Singapore ranked 24th and the University of Hong Kong 26th. Among the top 50 are universities in Japan, China and the Republic of Korea.
China has 11 universities in the TOP-400, where there are five more Indian institutes of technology. Peking University and Tsinghua University ranked in the top 50. Japan has 24 universities in the TOP-600, but only two of them have improved their positions.
United Kingdom
In the UK, along with four educational institutions that are in the top ten, the University of Edinburgh moved up 4 positions and took 17th place. Royal College London has moved from 26th to 19th place this year, the University of Bristol by 30, Manchester by 33, Glasgow by 51, and the University of Birmingham from 77th in 2012 to 62nd this year.
According to a QS statement, Oxford and Cambridge graduates were rated 27,000 employers around the world as the most competitive job seekers; graduates of the London School of Economics and Politics, or LSE, were also in the top five.
“Obviously, the prestige of educational institutions in the UK is recognized by employers around the world, and the brand of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge is still highly valued, despite the negative information related to rising tuition fees and student protests,” said Ben Sauter, head of information.
However, QS claims that the current level of funding for higher education threatens the UK’s position in the rankings.
“Of the 45 British universities that rank among the top 400 educational institutions in the world, 29 fell lower in ranking than they were during the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Twenty-one British universities have fallen more than 10 positions since the crisis, while only five have risen more than 10 places higher than in 2007. “
Insufficient research funding is a huge problem for British universities. It is on this indicator that US universities are significantly ahead of the oldest educational institutions in Europe.
Cambridge was the only British university among the top 30 universities in the world in terms of scientific publications. At the same time, United States universities ranked 31 out of 50.
The most significant achievement of this year’s QS ranking is its expansion, which has allowed to cover more educational institutions around the world. However, despite the fact that 800 institutions have already been included in the ranking, at the moment the ranking covers only 4% of the total number of universities in the world.

The new Academy of Fine Arts (NABA) is one of the most progressive educational institutions in Italy in the field of design and fashion. This university is one of the 5 best design schools in the world |
NABA Academy in Milan – practical training with famous Italian designers
The best artists in the world have long traveled to Italy to study their art. Nowadays, in order to get the best design education in the world, training in Italy is justified as never before. The Milan NABA Academy teaches practicing designers known all over the world, which is very important for students because they receive knowledge directly from practitioners – recognized masters of his business. In the process of learning, students help them create their own collections, learn to develop large projects. The main areas of study at the academy – interior design, classical design, clothing design, as well as painting and art. There are 11 specialties in the academy. Next year, NABA also plans to open specialties in the fields of advertising and PR. The philosophy of the academy is learning through practice, when students gain new knowledge in practical classes. NABA has the same non-standard approaches to learning as he does: his building has an unusual glass shape, the corridors and classrooms are creatively decorated by the students themselves. At any time of the day, students can come to the auditorium, where there are stretchers and canvases, so even at night in the academy you can often meet working young people. University corridors are painted by students and, walking them, you can meet artists squatting or in the lotus position. – they draw, compose, talk loudly to themselves – for the NABA academy this is the norm, because students here are engaged in creativity, which is encouraged here in any of its manifestations. Education at the academy is in Italian or English. Most courses are taught in English – the only exception is the art of photography, which is taught in Italian. The NABA Academy was founded about 30 years ago by a group of famous Italian designers.
